Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest World Premiere

By 5:30 A.M. on June 24, 2006, the morning of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest World Premiere, over 5000 excited fans were already lined up at the gates of Disneyland. Once those gates opened, they flocked in and staked their claims along the lengthy red carpet, prepared to spend the next 14 hours or more braving the California summer heat and the chaotic frenzy typical at movie premieres in hopes of obtaining a photo or autograph from their favorite stars from the film…many of them hoping to interact with Captain Jack Sparrow himself, Mr. Johnny Depp.

Depp was the last celebrity to arrive on the red carpet, having already had a full day – spending time with seriously ill children through a charity organization, and being among the first to ride the newly refurbished Pirates of the Caribbean ride, featuring a stunning hologram of Davey Jones and new animatronic figures of Captain Barbossa and Captain Jack Sparrow.

Due to Depp’s late arrival on the red carpet and spending over two hours signing autographs for lucky fans, the movie itself was late in starting. Several media outlets stationed near the end of the red carpet became impatient waiting for Depp to make his way to them, yet Depp continued to calmly move up the rows of barricades, signing autographs, posing for photos and exchanging a few words with fans here and there. “Thank you for coming out tonight,” he was heard saying on several occasions. Meanwhile, a few interviewers reportedly grew tired of waiting and jumped the barricades, making their way toward Depp, at which point his security detail closed in and surrounded the actor, literally trotting him the rest of the way up the red carpet and into the screening area…leaving several hopeful fans tearfully disappointed and many media outlets grumbling after not receiving their promised interview with Depp.

After a few more group photos in the movie screening area, the film finally began around 10:00 P.M. Afterward, lucky viewers raved about the movie, many declaring it to be much better than Curse of the Black Pearl…exciting news for those who may have had their doubts about the sequel ever being able to top the original.

After being forced to cancel interviews in New York City last week due to illness, this week will be cram-packed with premieres, press conferences and even a special ceremony for Depp. The London premiere will take place on July 3, the Paris premiere on July 6, and the Japanese premiere on July 10. During the Paris premiere, Depp will be presented with the Grande Médaille de vermeil de la ville de Paris, honorary award for act of devotion, by the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest opens in wide release in the UK on July 6, and in the USA on July 7.
